The Board of Directors of Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity is pleased to report the designation of an upcoming Habitat house to be named in honor of retired President and CEO, Pat Wirth. The Patricia Carey Wirth House is a celebration of the nearly two decades Pat spent at the helm of this affiliate, leading tremendous growth in providing simple, decent housing for so many families in southern Beaufort and Jasper Counties.
During her years of dedicated service, 54 houses were built in Bluffton and another 14 houses were built in Ridgeland. In addition, Pat worked with the Town of Hilton Head to secure a donation of land for the first Habitat community on the Island. The Glen, being built in two phases, will ultimately be the home for thirty-two families. Twenty-three families currently reside in The Glen and one of the final nine families will help build and buy the Patricia Carey Wirth House.
In 2001, Pat proposed opening a Habitat ReStore in Bluffton to the Board of Directors. The store opened in a small space on Bluffton Road and is now located in a 20,000 sq. ft. space in Plantation Park. The ReStore provides local residents with a means to donate gently used furniture, appliances, housewares and more to be sold at the store at a discounted price to those who might not be able to afford new items. In addition to supporting Habitat’s mission, tons of still-usable items are kept from local landfills each year.
“The Board couldn’t think of a more fitting tribute to Pat’s accomplishments than a house built in her honor,” said former Board Chair, Blaine Lotz. “We hope others in the community will join us in support of this celebration of Pat’s time with Habitat and in wishing her the best in retirement.”
